Hi, I’m Anne, the illustrator of these Enchanting ABC Flashcards and owner of Three Acorns Studio, but also a mom to 3 wonderful children :)
I chose a Waldorf education for my three kids because of its integration of nature, art, and movement into the curriculum. This holistic approach has been incredibly beneficial in fostering their creativity, curiosity, and love of learning.
I created this enchanting ABC set during the pandemic when I had to homeschool my Waldorf first grader. It was a challenging time for sure to have all 3 at home for many months, but it also provided an opportunity for us to explore creative ways to learn. Many of the games included in this set were inspired by the wonderful lessons our teacher provided during our homeschooling journey, which I adapted to make learning at home engaging and fun.
Engaging Guided Learning Exercises
Our ABC flashcards come with 26 easy-to-follow guided learning exercises that require minimal materials. Each game is designed to spark your child's curiosity and foster imaginative ways to learn new letters. I incorporate art, nature, music, and movement in our activities, promoting creativity, free play, and joy! Learning with these flashcards engages not only the mind but the whole body as well.
Recognizing Curves and Lines: The Foundation of Letter Learning
The journey to reading and writing begins with recognizing shapes—curves and lines. These fundamental elements are the building blocks of all letters. I noticed with my own children that once they mastered these basic shapes, learning letters became much easier! My flashcards are designed to make this initial stage fun and effective.
Interactive Activities: Play Dough, Sensory Tracing, and Back Tracing
One of the favorite activities in our house was playdough tracing. My kids loved using playdough to form the curves and lines of each letter. This hands-on approach not only made learning enjoyable but also helped develop their fine motor skills.
We also enjoyed sensory tracing. We used materials like sand, rice, beans and even a tray of flour to trace the shapes of letters. My children loved feeling the different textures while reinforcing their recognition of curves and lines. These activities were especially helpful for my tactile learners. I found this perfect Wooden Salt Tracing Tray on Etsy that allows the child to look at a standing flashcard while tracing.
Another fun activity we did was tracing letters on each other’s backs! It became a delightful guessing game and helped my kids develop a kinaesthetic awareness of the letter shapes.
Learning the Alphabetical Order
Once my children were comfortable with basic shapes, we moved on to learning the alphabetical order. Our flashcards are perfect for helping children visually and mentally organize the letters in sequence. We often turned this into a game by mixing up the flashcards and asking them to put them back in order. Singing the alphabet song while arranging the cards added an extra layer of fun.
Some kids naturally love competition, so using a clock or a sand timer is probably the simplest way to spark their enthusiasm! Integrating movements like jump roping or sandbag throwing can help reinforce the order of the letters while adding a physical element to the learning process.
Recognizing Uppercase and Lowercase Letters
The next step was to introduce uppercase and lowercase letters. Our flashcards include games that help recognize the upper and lowercase letters, making it easier for children to remember the differences.
Our games like scavenger hunts, bingo, and hopscotch are fun ways to help your child recognize the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters. These activities are sure to engage them and make learning exciting.
Moving Towards Reading Syllables
The final step in our ABC journey was combining letters to form syllables. We started with simple, two-letter combinations and gradually increased the complexity. You can use the words at the bottom of our cards to help your child read the syllables. This practice lays the groundwork for reading simple words and eventually sentences.
