Mindful ABC Poster for Kids

10 Must-Have Resources for Raising Mindful Kids

Posted by Anne Fillion on

In today's fast-paced world, helping children develop mindfulness can be a game-changer for their emotional and mental well-being. Mindfulness isn't just for adults; kids, too, can benefit from learning how to stay present, manage their emotions, and find calm in the chaos. I've always been passionate about this topic. Growing up with a mom who is a psychologist, I was introduced to some of these practices as a child, and they made a lasting impact on me. With my own bachelor's degree in psychology, I've continued to explore and advocate for the benefits of mindfulness. Now, I also try to incorporate these principles into my art, creating pieces that inspire calm and reflection.
In this blog post, we’ll explore ten mindful practices tailored for kids. These activities are designed to be fun and engaging, making it easy for your child to incorporate mindfulness into their daily routine.

1. Mindful ABC Poster:

  • Our Mindful ABC Poster is a vibrant and interactive tool designed to introduce children to mindfulness concepts. Each letter of the alphabet corresponds to a mindfulness practice or value, such as "A" for appreciation and "B" for be brave. With whimsical colorful illustrations and simple words, it serves as a visual reminder for kids to incorporate mindfulness into their daily lives.
  • Hang the poster in a prominent place in your child's room or play area. Encourage them to point to a letter each day and discuss what it means to be mindful in that aspect of their lives.

  • Create a collection of mindfulness books curated specifically for your young readers. These books ideally explore themes such as gratitude, compassion, and self-awareness through engaging stories and relatable characters. From picture books to chapter books, try to include something for every age and interest.
  • Create a cozy reading corner in your home stocked with mindfulness books. Set aside time each day to read together as a family and discuss the lessons learned from the stories.
  • Here's a few of my favorite mindfulness books are : Breathe like a bear, Hot cocoa calm, Mindful kids : 50 activities for kindness, focus and calm (this one is a card set).
3. Mindful Coloring Books:
  • Mindful coloring books offer intricate designs and patterns designed to promote relaxation and focus. With themes ranging from nature scenes to mandalas, these coloring books provide a creative outlet for young children to express themselves while practicing mindfulness.
  • Organize a family coloring session where everyone picks a page from the coloring book and spends time coloring together. Use the activity as an opportunity to practice deep breathing and mindful awareness.
4. Guided Meditation Apps or videos:
  • Explore guided meditation apps specifically designed for children, offering a variety of mindfulness exercises and relaxation techniques. These apps often feature soothing voices, calming music, and visualizations to help kids unwind and find peace. Here's a few meditation apps for kids : Mindful Powers, The Calm app, Smiling Mind
  • Here are my favorite meditation videos for kids : Happy Minds, Flaxseeds & Fairytales.
  • Integrate 5 minutes guided meditation sessions into your child's daily routine, such as listening to a short meditation before bedtime or using a mindfulness app during quiet time.
5. Mindful Movement Activities:
  • Engage in mindful movement practices like yoga ( ABC yoga), tai chi, or dance to promote body awareness and relaxation. These activities encourage children to connect with their breath, improve flexibility, and cultivate mindfulness through movement.
  • Start the day with a family yoga session, following along with kid-friendly yoga videos or simple poses. Encourage your child to focus on their breath and pay attention to how their body feels in each posture.
6. Nature Exploration Kits:
  • Nature exploration kits provide children with tools and resources to discover the wonders of the natural world. From magnifying glasses to binoculars to field guides, these kits encourage curiosity, observation, and appreciation for the elements of our environment.
  • Plan a weekend nature adventure with your child using items from the exploration kit. Go on a hike, explore a local park, or spend time observing wildlife in your backyard while discussing the importance of mindfulness in nature.

7. Mindful Games and Puzzles:

  • Discover a variety of games and puzzles designed to promote mindfulness and concentration in children. These games often incorporate elements of focus, attention, and problem-solving, encouraging kids to engage their minds in a mindful way.
Set aside time for a family game night featuring mindfulness games like memory games, "Buddha Board", "Yoga Spinner," or "Mindfuln Maze Board." Use the opportunity to bond as a family while practicing mindfulness skills.8. Mindful Breathing Exercises:
  • Teach your child simple breathing exercises to help them calm their minds and bodies during moments of stress or anxiety. These exercises focus on slow, deep breaths to promote relaxation and emotional regulation.
  • Practice belly breathing with your child by lying down together and placing a stuffed animal on their belly. Instruct them to take slow breaths, watching the animal rise and fall with each inhale and exhale.
9. Gratitude Journals:
  • Introduce your child to the practice of gratitude by encouraging them to keep a gratitude journal. This journal provides a space for them to reflect on the things they are thankful for each day, fostering a positive mindset and appreciation for the present moment.
  • Set aside time each evening for your child to write in their gratitude journal. Encourage them to list three things they are grateful for that day and reflect on how those things made them feel.
  • My 3 kids have blank journals but they also have this amazing guided gratitude journal called "Big Life Journal". The daily activities included in this journal help kids to focus on encouraging, self-loving thoughts and practice having a good mindset, gratitude, kindness, and self-esteem.
10. Mindful Parenting Resources:
  • I created a beautiful collection of mindful prints for kids and families. A few years ago, I was searching for artistic posters to help integrate and help as a reminder to add mindfulness practices in my own family.  As an artist, I appreciate beautiful wall art that adds charm and personality to my home, but I couldn't seem to find any prints that would fit in my interior decor.  I was looking for a print to hang next to our dining table, close enough to read it and discuss it periodically as a family. I decided to paint this botanical family values print (who is now hanging next to my plants and dining table) to serve as a source of inspiration for families and add a touch of elegance and serenity to my decor.

  • Explore resources and tools that support your own mindfulness journey as a parent. From books and podcasts to online courses and support groups, these resources provide guidance and inspiration for incorporating mindfulness into your family's life.
  • Start a mindfulness practice of your own by dedicating a few minutes each day to meditation, deep breathing, or mindful reflection. Lead by example and create a peaceful, mindful environment for your child to thrive in.

Incorporating mindful practices into your child’s daily routine can make a big difference in their emotional and mental well-being. The ten practices I've discussed, from simple breathing exercises to creative activities like mindful drawing, to integrating my mindful art into the home and kids lives, offer valuable tools to help kids manage stress, focus better, and build resilience. These practices can also strengthen your bond as you explore them together. Remember, the key is to be consistent and patient. Mindfulness is a skill that develops over time, so start small and stay committed. With these practices, you'll help your child grow into a more focused, calm, and mindful individual.
